Thank you for spending a
few minutes with Vanguard.
00:03
In these few minutes, we'll
learn more about how to
00:07
update your beneficiary and
00:09
personal information in your
employer plan at Vanguard.
00:12
In this presentation, we'll be
referring to common themes and
00:15
website navigation tips that
00:17
apply to most retirement
plans at Vanguard.
00:20
The options for your
specific employer plan
00:22
may be different than
the example shown here.
00:25
We encourage you to establish
00:27
online access to your
account and then go to
00:29
the plan rules section for the most
00:31
up to date and accurate
information available.
00:33
During this video, scroll down
to the bottom of your screen
00:37
to access several web links
listed within the resources area.
00:41
You may click and
access those supporting
00:43
resources at any time
during our presentation.
00:46
So let's talk about updating
00:48
your personal information
in your Vanguard account.
00:52
It only takes a few minutes of
your time today to make sure that
00:56
your accounts are accessible and
00:58
secure for both you
and your loved ones.
01:01
You never want anyone to
access your information
01:03
unless they have specific
and documented permission.
01:07
Having secured and appropriate
usernames and passwords on all of
01:12
your online accounts is essential to
01:15
keeping your information
safe and secure.
01:18
Setting up your security
questions with answers you can
01:22
remember makes it easy and
fast to access your account,
01:26
whether you're doing so online in
01:28
the app or through a plan
specialist over the phone.
01:32
Having the proper contact
information on your account means
01:36
that if you do leave your employer
or lose track of your account,
01:40
you can be located and
reunited with your money.
01:44
Updating your beneficiary information
means that your money will
01:48
go to who or where you want
it to on your passing.
01:52
Since our lives are in a
constant state of change,
01:56
we have to make sure
our financial accounts
01:58
keep up with those changes.
02:00
In a word, you have control
of your account for today,
02:05
in the future, and even when
you're not around anymore.
02:08
All employer plans at Vanguard have
02:11
their own ways of keeping
this information up to date.
02:13
You may contact us at
Vanguard anytime to
02:16
find out exactly how this is
updated within your plan.
02:19
But for those plans that allow for
02:22
participants to adjust
their information online,
02:24
here's where you can go to
make these important updates.
02:29
Go to the login page at either
vanguard.com forwardslash
02:34
Retirement Plans or
ownfuture.vanguard.com.
02:39
Click the login button.
02:42
Enter your current user name
and password and then pass
02:46
the authentication
process by entering
02:48
the code you receive either via text,
02:50
phone, or email or by
02:52
clearing security through the
Vanguard app on your smartphone.
02:55
If you haven't yet registered
for your vanguard plan online,
02:59
or forgot your username or password,
03:01
then click the links that you'll
see when you're on this webpage.
03:05
You may also click the link in
03:06
the resource section at the bottom of
03:08
this video presentation and watch
03:11
the account registration
video in this series.
03:15
This is an example of the
Vanguard Employer plan homepage.
03:19
To update your information,
03:20
click the link in the upper right of
03:22
your screen through the profile link.
03:25
If you also have individual
accounts at Vanguard,
03:28
you'll see both personal investor
and employer plan settings.
03:32
If given the choice,
click Employer plan
03:35
Settings and come back later
03:37
to update your personal
investor accounts.
03:39
Keep in mind, the
information you enter for
03:42
your employer plan will not carry
over to your personal accounts.
03:46
You must enter that
information separately and for
03:49
each of your financial accounts,
Vanguard or otherwise.
03:54
Within the M profile area,
03:56
you can either update your
information or it will tell
04:00
you how to make the change if not
available within the website.
04:04
For instance, what if you change
04:06
your name because of a
marriage or a divorce?
04:08
If you do not see this
option on your screen,
04:12
you'll know for sure
that you have to make
04:14
the change directly
through your employer.
04:17
Here is the street address we
currently have on file for you.
04:21
This is one of those things that
you also must update through
04:25
your employer and instructions on how
04:27
to do that will be listed
below your address.
04:29
If your address is not correct,
04:32
it is imperative that you get it
04:34
updated as soon as you possibly can.
04:37
For most accounts, your banking
information is listed next.
04:42
If you change employers
or addresses frequently,
04:45
having your bank account
listed here gives you
04:48
a way to stay connected
to your account.
04:50
Even if you're not thinking about
04:52
taking distributions from
your plan anytime soon,
04:55
it's a good idea to set up
this while you're here.
04:58
Click Add a bank.
05:01
You'll need your bank routing number,
05:04
account number, and the
exact name on the account.
05:09
Once you filled in all the
required fields, click Continue.
05:14
Now come some extra security.
05:17
To make sure you are
who you say you are,
05:20
we need to send you
a verification code.
05:22
Select how you'd like to receive that
05:24
and click agree and send the code.
05:28
Enter that code in
the space provided,
05:31
click verify my number,
05:33
and once verified, you can
05:36
finally add that bank
account to your file.
05:38
Click add this bank.
05:41
That's it for getting
one bank account
05:44
aligned to your employer plan.
05:46
You can go back later
if your bank account
05:48
information changes or if you
05:50
want to add a second
account to your profile.
05:53
At the bottom of the personal tab are
05:56
the areas for your
beneficiary information,
05:58
email address, and phone numbers.
06:01
Again, if your employer
requires otherwise,
06:04
you may be instructed to go to
06:05
your benefits office
or possibly fill out
06:08
a form and you may not see the
beneficiary area here at all.
06:12
If you see the link where you can add
06:15
a primary beneficiary, click it here.
06:18
If you're married, your spouse is
your primary beneficiary 100%,
06:23
but they still need to be listed
on your account to forego
06:27
any undue delays in receiving
those assets on your passing.
06:31
If you're married, click the button
and follow those instructions.
06:35
To have anyone other than your
current spouse listed as primary in
06:40
any amount would require notarized
consent of your current spouse.
06:45
Since our friend Jasmine is single,
06:47
it's even more important that we
at Vanguard know her preferences.
06:51
We'll mark her as not
married and click Continue.
06:55
Here, you may elect for a trust or
06:58
an estate to be listed as the
primary beneficiary on your account.
07:02
Please confer with your personal tax
07:05
professional or estate
planning attorney
07:07
to see if either of these options
07:09
are appropriate for your situation.
07:12
For this example, we're going to list
07:15
Jasmine's father as her
primary beneficiary.
07:18
Click the top button designating
07:20
an individual person and then
click Add a new beneficiary.
07:25
Fill in the required
fields on this page.
07:29
You'll also need to enter
07:30
either the beneficiary's address or
07:33
the last four digits of their
Social Security number.
07:36
If you don't know
either of those things,
07:38
you may enter an alternate address,
07:40
but make sure to go back
and update this with
07:43
correct information just as
soon as you can confirm it.
07:47
Once completed, click
Save My Changes.
07:51
If Jasmine wants both her father and
07:54
her mother to be co
primary beneficiaries,
07:57
she can designate each
of them as primary,
07:59
50% each or whatever she'd like.
08:02
It's more likely she'll list one
parent as primary and then the
08:05
other as 100% secondary
or contingent.
08:09
If Tom Green predeceases his wife,
08:12
then his wife will receive the
amount upon Jasmine's passing.
08:16
Vanguard online
beneficiary designations
08:19
can be made through the
tertiary or third level.
08:22
Make the necessary changes
here and click Save Changes.
08:27
This confirms your
beneficiary designation.
08:30
You'll receive a notification
that you've made the change on
08:33
your account based on your
communication preferences.
08:37
The email section will allow for you
08:40
to update your personal
email address.
08:42
In most cases, your work
email address will be
08:46
listed but cannot be changed
in your vanguard view.
08:49
If your plan allows for a secondary
email address to be saved,
08:53
click the Edit button and
08:55
follow the instructions
to add that information.
08:58
Each employer plan
has their own rules.
09:01
But if your plan allows you
to update your phone numbers,
09:04
click the edit button here
to make sure your home,
09:07
office, and mobile contact
information is correct.
09:12
If you want to update your
communication preferences from
09:16
electronic to paper mail
or mail back to email,
09:19
click the communication tab
and update your choice.
09:23
Here you can update your
preference for e delivery or
09:27
traditional paper statements or
other account communications.
09:30
Below this, you can
also choose to receive
09:33
transaction alert texts to your
cell phone number on file.
09:38
Under the security tab is where
you can update your username,
09:43
password, and security questions.
09:45
Your plan may have other types of
09:47
security you can activate
within your account,
09:50
but what we'll see in this
section are common to all plans.
09:54
If it's been a while since
you've changed your password
09:58
or if any of your other online
accounts have been compromised,
10:01
it's recommended that you click
10:02
the Edit button here and
update those passwords.
10:07
Be sure to use good cyber practices
10:10
when setting up user
names and passwords.
10:13
Follow the onscreen guidelines
and be sure to record
10:16
your new password in
10:18
an appropriate and secured
place within your home.
10:21
To change your username,
10:22
you may have to click the link and
contact us at Vanguard directly.
10:27
It's also here that you can change
10:30
or update your security questions.
10:33
It's important that
you choose questions
10:35
and answers that you can remember.
10:37
Also, your security questions
are used to establish
10:40
access when you call to speak
with a plan specialist.
10:43
If you don't have those
security questions listed,
10:46
the plan specialist will need
to verify your identity in
10:50
another way to save time and
10:53
to be secure with all of your
account access over computer,
10:56
app, or over the phone.
10:58
Please make sure to have
11:00
all three questions
answered in this section.
11:03
You may also see ways
for you to designate
11:06
approved devices or account
activity alerts on this page.
11:10
Edit those areas you wish to update.
11:14
Going back to your main website view,
11:17
for any other changes you may
want to make within your plan,
11:20
click the Explore link
on the right side of
11:23
the top tabs and choose
Explore Overview.
11:28
Under plan details, click
the plan rules Link.
11:33
Here's where you can get all the
specifics as to how your plan
11:37
processes everything we talked
about in today's video.
11:41
There's even a section that details
if or how your plan allows for
11:46
a designated access person or
more formal power of attorney.
11:50
Remember, just because you may have
11:53
a personal or family
power of attorney,
11:56
they will not have access
to your account unless
11:59
they're designated within
those specific accounts.
12:03
So what should you do today?
12:06
Review all the information within
12:09
the profile section of your
Vanguard Secure homepage,
12:12
including everything
we talked about in
12:14
this list and in this video.
12:16
If you need help with this or if
you'd prefer to talk with anyone,
12:19
give us a call at 805231188.
12:23
Monday through Friday,
8:30 A.M. To 9:00 P.M.
12:27
Eastern Time. That's 5:30 A.M.
To 6:00 P.M. Pacific Time.
12:32
If you have questions
regarding another topic,
12:35

of the videos in this series.
12:38
